[KONTROL]

Alland Byallo

[KONTROL], Nightlight Music, Liebe*Detail, Missive Music

Craig Kuna

[KONTROL], Mothership

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

This event will feature extensive installations and performances. Be ready. Anything goes.

This is a one time event and your last chance to experience the legendary Pegasus downtown venue.

About Alland:
Alland Byallo is one of the busiest men in the San Francisco Techno community. Having produced electronic music for over 10 years (and DJ’d for nearly as long) Alland come to be an international DJ and producer, releasing music on respected US and European record labels such as Liebe*Detail, Floppy Funk, Dirtybird, and Utensil Recordings, and headlining events on both sides of the country. His music, a blend of old and new elements of techno, house and minimal, is regularly charted and has been licensed to CD’s released by labels like Universal and Proton Music.

Not only is he resident, designer and A&R for the States’ most notorious techno night, [KONTROL], he is also booked regularly alongside talents such as Superpitcher, Trentemoller, Swayzak, Modeselektor, Claude VonStroke, Jeff Samuel, Heartthrob, Ambivalent and many others. Alland has quickly grown to be one of the most in-demand Techno talents that SF has to offer, and after performing live at Seattle‘s Decibel Festival and DJing at Lovefest this year, it’s obvious that 2008 promises to be a huge year for both him and his label, Nightlight Music.

About Craig:
Hailing from the once industrial city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Craig found his early tastes in music heavily influenced by the environment that surrounded him. Being brought up on a diet of heavy metal and classic rock, he found himself wielding the proverbial axe at the age of 12. Throughout his teen years, Craig played guitar, bass, and drums in many local Pittsburgh metal and punk bands. In 1993, at age 15, he attended his first rave, and the rest is history.

His influences of hard-edged music initially turned his ears towards the gritty sounds of D’n'B and Detroit Techno as his passion for the beat flourished. Within a few years, Craig sold his guitar, bass, and amps to buy his first set of 1200’s. He started off playing breakbeats and D’n'B, but soon after found his art in techno, due to it’s complexity and his ability to create longer mixes with more minimal tracks. Soon after, in the wake of a burgeoning rave scene, he decided it was time to introduce other people to the music he loved and played, and in 1998, at the ripe old age of 19, he threw his first event.

In the years to come Craig continued to host events, from small club after-hours to 5000 person warehouse raves, bringing the likes of Green Velvet, The Stickmen, Mike Dearborn, Marco Carola, Funk’ D’void, Slam, and H-Foundation to name a few. After relocating to San Francisco in 2001 in an effort to broaden his horizons, he realized that techno was just about a dead art on the West Coast, and started to get more into house music, or as people so often call it, he became “San Francsicanized”. After getting burned out on the music and the scene and taking a brief break from it all, Craig turned to what was happening in Europe and, more specifically, Germany for inspiration.

The result: [KONTROL] and a host of remixes on Mothership and blipswitch.

*Some notes on the talent*

A deep passion for music, connecting with people, and a love for life are the focus for Deepak Sharma as he continues to grow as a DJ, producer and record label owner.

The story of Deepak Sharma’s rise can be traced back to 2001 when as a promoter; he was booking and playing alongside some of the world’s most recognizable talent. One particular night opened the door for Deepak was booking Fabric resident’s Craig Richards and Lee Burridge as Tyrant at his Wednesday night soiree at a lounge in Brooklyn named Boogaloo. The night was a resounding success, and lead to Deepak being asked to release a mix compilation reflective of his style of music and vibe of the venue. Finally, after nearly two years of work, Deepak released Boogaloo. Brooklyn. 3:23pm in late 2004 with music from producers that weren’t well known at the time or a style and sound as popular as today. The compilation received worldwide praise with reviews in leading dance music publications such as De:bug, BPM, Remix, BPM, URB, DJ Times, Raveline, Beatfactor, ClubbingSpain and Sound Revolt. Germany’s prestigious De:bug Magazine called it, “One of the finest mix CD’s I’ve heard in a long time.” Similar high praise came from Big Shot Magazine, who said, “Sharma indulges us in some of the most pristine minimal techno we’ve heard in ages. This is mandatory late-night/morning after listening. Not since Terry Francis’ ‘Architecture’ series has a mix compilation explored the realm of tech-house so well.” The release of the compilation opened the doors for Deepak to begin to tour North America, South America and gig in Europe. Besides the numerous clubs, festivals and lounges Deepak has played, one highlight includes spinning an in-store DJ set at Virgin Megastore in Union Square, New York City as promotion for the release of the mix compilation.

It was during this time Deepak turned his focus to producing. After the release of the compilation, Deepak met Dieter Krause who also produces under the moniker, Laplaceausoleil and had a track on the mix. It wasn’t long before the two began to work on tracks together, leading to their partnership. Eventually in 2006, Deepak decided to start Hidden Recordings as a means to take their sound to the world.

Since then, Hidden Recordings has provided a wide range of techno to hundreds of DJs and fans. The label’s sound ranges from deep techno to atmospheric chill-out with quirky, groovy bass lines and has been played in big room gigs, festivals, to smaller lounges and early morning terraces.
The press has taken notice of the duo’s rising popularity, with AOL Music’s Spinner.com comparing their sound and style to minimal techno giants Lusine, Superpitcher and Booka Shade. In addition the duo has been reviewed in prominent magazines such as XLR8R, DJ Times, Time Out New York, MixMag (UK), Trax (France) and Raveline (Germany), licensed music to UK label Four-Twenty for their Music02 mix compilation and peaked as high as #3 on the Balance Record Pool Top 50 Chart. Global recognition continues to mount as their tracks have reached Top 20 downloads on Germany’s Kompakt-MP3, and Top 10 downloads on HRFQ in Japan.

In 2007, Deepak and Dieter beat out established publishing groups and produced music for Singapore’s Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency and their client, Heineken Global.

In 2008, Deepak and Dieter decided to expand the Hidden Recordings roster to include like-minded artists that they admire and enjoy musically with Gustavo Lamas, Karri O, Lineas De Nazca and Monkey Brothers. Each release will be complete with a remix by Deepak and Dieter. The label currently has five releases available, and major worldwide partners include Beatport, Kompakt, Juno, DanceRecords, and HRFQ.

The label has seen support from artist/djs like Pier Bucci, Butane, Argenis Brito, Alexi Delano, Greg Shiff, Maetrik, Noah Pred, Patrick Bateman, Detroit Techno Militia, Chris Fortier, Guti, Blk Market, Biach Corp to name a few!

1. Paul Alexander is my current music production partner and big fan of the effect of a resonator.

2. Edgar Um is to be avoided when he tells you he is moving due to large record collection size.

3. Aaron Clark owns his own nightclub in the southside.

4. I will be playing using no complete songs this event. I will be using only loops and portions of tracks, a la the speedy j molecular deejaying concept of the KREATE project last year. I will post the loop and part list to hijackpgh.com.

*Some notes on the talent*

On Taimur–
Local: I first ran into Taimur’s set while at the wolf+lamb thanksgiving afterhours event @ the marcy in brooklyn. The set will be up on the hijack podcast soon, but it was this event that brought a lot of inspiration toward doing hijack. The production was right — turbosound in a room about 1/3 of the size of amsterdam, lightbox install, raspberries on entry — and taimur was excellent, for what i heard of a crazy 3.5 hour set. (Those ny guys go strong and long) Now, its our pleasure to bring him in.

Aaron says: For Taimur, you’ll get unrelenting, fast-paced bass lines like the new yorkers always deliver. He DESTROYS it every time I see him there.

On Caley Martin:
Local: Its fortunate that I’ve had a chance to see Caley play live, b/c otherwise the cynical side of me would be disbelieving of the crisp mixing and thoughtful programming that goes into his regular internet radio shows. The humanaut folks know what’s up with Caley, and its great that the hijack crowd will now as well.

Aaron says: We know caley for his gorgeous deep house and techno – west coast style. caley’s extensive music collection and the lengths he takes to acquire hard to find/unreleased tracks have even managed to creep out sean cusick. that should tell you something.

ALSO — Expect some announcements about our July 4th bash coming soon.

ABOUT SHAWN RUDIMAN

Having gained worldwide recognition from the techno community in 1999 with his stunning releases for Dan Bell’s 7th City label, Shawn Rudiman has rapidly built himself up to become one of the most eagerly observed figures in the scene. Writing futuristic, melodic techno and electro containing exceptional depth and funk, his ensuing reputation has been justly deserved.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, USA, he is renowned for his live sets as well as his releases – performances outstanding not only in their musical content but also the large degree of genuine improvisation that goes into them – each one a fluid jam, performed 100% live off analogue equipment, occasionally lasting up to five hours.

Shawn’s musical career began as one half of THD, an industrial/IDM group which gave him his first releases. After four albums and almost ten years involved in that project, he became influenced by the deeper, soulful grooves of Detroit techno – utilising his extensive collection of vintage analog equipment, he began experimenting with this music, producing and releasing first as Tr-Generation on his own Hypervinyl imprint, then more successfully as himself on Dan Bell’s 7th City Records- before recently setting up his current label, Technoir Audio.

Shawn’s production style steers clear of any standard ‘club’ techno format, instead delving deep into the more jazzy, melodic, (and sadly oft neglected) side of the genre – layering synthetic chords, bass grooves, keyboard harmonies and vocal snippets to create thickly textured, subtly expanding and inimitably danceable works.

ABOUT SAGE

“(Sage is) one of the hardest working DJ’s in the scene, it’s a true testament to her character how she can travel, DJ, produce, model, and still come off as one of the most genuine and truly inspirational performers around. With that the best is yet to come for America’s first lady of drum & bass. Watch out!”
Chris Muniz (Urb, XLR8R, Knowledge, DJ Times)

‘She has this charisma about her. Laura is easily one of the best in the drum n bass field, she rips. She’s out spinning, so we’re supporting a woman who doesn’t just model out clothes and we get to work with someone who’s cool as f–k.
DC Vice President Damon Way

‘There’s an element about her that people really like, and are attracted to. I met Laura years ago at a small party in San Francisco. She has great chrisma, and an amazing sense of style. That chrisma shines best when Sage is behind the decks and working a club, blending hard and heavy drum ‘n’ bass bangers together to bring the energy to a fever pitch. Her taste in music is eclectic and discriminate, and her mixing conveys dynamic precision’.
Damian Higgins aka Dieselboy
(USA’s premier Drum ‘n’ Bass DJ/Producer)
